The murga Frágile through a statement issued on Wednesday night has decided not to participate in the contest of murgas of the carnival of Santoña 2022.
RELEASE FRAGILE MURGA:
Yesterday Tuesday the City Council of Santoña convened a meeting where the groups were informed that, contrary to what some of us proposed and what other City Councils with relevant carnivals, such as Las Palmas, have decided, the Murgas Contest will not be postponed in time and will be held on the scheduled dates.
Given this decision, and due to the current situation of the pandemic, from the Murga Fragile we want to communicate our resignation to participate in the Contest.
Today in Cantabria has broken the record of contagions during these two years of pandemic. As a consequence, the hospital pressure is again becoming unsustainable, so we do not believe that these data are compatible with the resumption of the rehearsals for the preparation of the Contest, since we are dealing with large groups singing in small spaces and with little or no ventilation.
During the meeting most of the murguista groups warned of positive cases within their ranks, so we consider it imprudent and even reckless to some extent to continue with the rehearsals until the numbers of contagions do not go down again. Especially when the Councillor for Festivities himself, on December 28, when 34 positive cases had been reported the day before and there was a monstrous incidence of 926 cases 14 days before, "recommended" to the different groups to stop the rehearsals "at least until after Epiphany". It does not seem very consistent with that recommendation three weeks ago, nor the best measure to avoid contributing to the spread of the virus in our town, rehearse again today, January 12, with 44 cases reported yesterday and an incidence above 3300.
There are hundreds of santoñeses that today can not develop their professional activities in full due to the restrictions that the authorities have implemented, in some cases even with the total closure of their businesses, as is the case of nightlife.
That is why it would seem to us tremendously unfair and unsupportive that while those hundreds of fellow countrymen can not earn their bread as they deserve due to a supposed effort that they are asked for the containment of the virus, we participate in a show that is only leisure, and that could contribute to the growth of the data of "positives" in our town.
So, we are not going to get on stage to dedicate coplas of praise to the Sanitarios, however well deserved they may be, while we dedicate ourselves to spread the virus in our town.
And we will not participate in a playful-festive spectacle while hundreds of santoñeses are not allowed to work and earn their bread as they deserve.
We leave this exercise of absolute and reprehensible hypocrisy once again to our politicians.
Long live Santoña and its carnival!!!!
